Our first Rising Stars Camp ended today and was a huge success. Today was the most exciting day of camp. We had our 3 on 3 championship game, Queen of the Court championship, and finished our freethrow competition.
Camp started with our daily stations. Players reviewed many of the FUNdamentals they learned earlier in the week and also took part in some advanced drills. A few of the new drills were the 3 person piston shooting drill, Continous shooting circuit, and our beat the pro stations where players try to make a certain number of shots. In beat the pro you get one point for every shot you make and the "pro" gets two points for every miss. Players moved back and forth from the left wing to the right wing. You can play to 11 or 21. Did anyone actually beat the pro? Yes! We had a few players beat the pro, which also shows the improvement they have made as shooters at camp this week.
We had a great demonstation at camp today that involved the varsity players and players at the camp. First, we let the varsity team show the players our offensive system. Next, players at the camp had an opportunity to try and stop the varsity team 3 times in a row. If they stopped the varsity players, then they got to be in the starting five in our end of camp exhibition game. We also included the younger players into our demonstration, which was a lot of fun. I added a few of the videos below. The varsity playeres did a great job demonstrating our offense. We may have been a bit generous, but one team of 5 did stop the varsity players 3 times. At the end of the demonstration we showed players the 11 man fast break drill and gave everyone an opportunity to run it. Basically, this is a continuous fast break drill that many basketball teams use to practice transition defense and offense.
After the demonstration we had our Queen of the Court finals. The winner was Remi Manning in the yellow (4th-6th) division an Tori Vivenzio in the middle school divison. Both players worked hard all week to win the competition. As a result, they received a Fear the General tshirt and certificate that named them Queen of the Court. Following the Queen of the Court finals was our 3 on 3 Championship. The middle school division had a 3 way tie for first place. We had to have a shoot off to get the final two teams and play a championship. In the end, the team of Liz Kirschner, Kelly Walsh, Eva Vredenburgh, and Kelsey Lyons won the 3 on 3 championship. It was an exciting final that came down to the last shot. I wouldn't have expected anything less after the fierce competition between the teams all week.
After the 3 on 3 championship the 4th-6th grade players competed in our defensive obstacle course, hot shot competition, and knockout. Parents were invited to camp at 11:15 and we had a great turnout. The middle school players competed against the varsity team in a fun exhibition game. The varsity ended up winning 23-9, but it was a great experience for all the players.
At the end of camp we gave out our final awards. Alexis Donovan and JIllian Yiammartino were our freethrow champions. Jillian won by one just one freethrow. Both players finished the week on a high note hitting over 80% on the final day of camp. We gave out our 3 on 3 awards and named our final Camper of the Day. The Camper of the Day was Charlene Fibbe. Charlene had a great week of camp and worked hard to imrpove each day. Every players received an official evaluation from the Rising Stars coaches that talks about their strengths and weaknesses as a player. We hope the evaluations will help players as they continue to improve before next season.
I have to take a minute to thank my coaching staff Rich DeMarco, Erin Parker, and Cassandra Fibbe for the hard work they put in this week. They were a huge part of our success and one of the reasons our camp ran so smoothly all week. I also have to thank the varsity players for taking time out of their schedules to volunteer at our camp. Sue Rose, Sam Charette, Haley Willis, Catherine Ecker, Rae Sanchez, and Molly Eagar were great with the kids and worked very hard to help them get better every day.
I am already looking forward to our camp next year. The coaching staff plans to make our 2nd Rising Stars Camp better than the first. That is going to be a tall task after a fun filled week, but we are already discussing ideas.
