Communicate: to give information to someone by speaking....
I got ball! I got Ball!
I've got help! I've got help!
Pick Left! Watch Pick Left!
Players have to call out picks, let teammates know they are their to give help, and communicate in a number of other areas. At Rising Stars Camp, we are unique in that we teach this aspect of basketball to players at a young age. You can ask any high school, college, or professional basketball coach and they will stress the importance of communicating. Some coaches even keep track of this during practice and games. These coaches want to know who isn't communicating and this could impact a players minutes. This is something we stress at Hamilton-Wenham.
Communicating is actually a FUNdamental skill of basketball in my opinion. A lot of players do not like to talk with each other on the court and tend to be quiet. We start teaching this at a young age so players understand the importance of communication and the role it plays in basketball. We want them to be as loud as possible the entire game so they can constantly communicate with each other. If you come to a high school game you will hear our players talking on the court early and often.
Below is a clip from our pick and roll defense FUNdamental station. You can click the volume by highlighting the bottom right of the video and clicking the volume icon. You will hear the players calling out the pick and sliding into the paint as "help" defenders. Hamilton-Wenham players Kelly Walsh and Cassidy Cring coached the players through this drill.

Nora Gamber: Nora is new to camp this fall and has done a terrific job improving each week. She listens, works well with the other players in camp, and always tries to get better. In just a few short weeks her shot has improved and her ability to dribble with both hands. Great job!
