You will notice that I am demonstrating in some of the videos we took today. Each day, I am fortunate enough to go station to station to talk with players individually and as a group. Why am I able to do this? We have have at least 2 or 3 coaches at each of our four stations that do a terrific job (this includes current and former players, along with assistant coaches). Thanks to the fact that we have so many great coaches helping out I get a chance to go from station to station during each segment to help players refine their skills and teach advanced skills. I figured you may want to see some of the advanced skills players are learning with me at the stations.
We began the day with our daily trivia question: What former NBA player has a lay up drill named after him (I described the drill too). Kate Riccio started off our day at camp by answering the question correctly when she said George Mikan.
Our drills have started to become more advanced for players at all levels. We taught players how to run and defend a pick and roll, shoot layups from different places around the basket, use proper footwork when shooting off a screen (younger players learned basic shooting footwork), and worked on 1 on 1 defense in drill stations. I even took some time out to teach the older players reverse layups and how to split a double team or hedge in the pick and roll.
Below are some pictures and videos taken from our fundamentals stations:
Defending the Pick and Roll
Pick and Roll Offense
Advanced Ball Handling
The final video shows our players learning a new advanced two ball dribbling drill where they dribble one ball through their legs. Unfortunately, they have not mastered this skill yet, but I bet by the end of the week they will have it mastered so stay tuned for future videos. We are working on it and trying to get better each day!
